A closer look

Setting a stitch line down a watch band or punching a new tongue hole in thick strap leather takes two different cutting edges. We ground diamond tooth chisels for the stitch line and hollow punches for the round holes. The maker label beside this lists the prong counts and punch diameters.

• Diamond tooth chisels. The prong chisels punch diamond shaped openings that let waxed thread sit flat across the seam. Spacing stays uniform down the strap, even when you walk the tool around a tight watch lug curve.
• Hollow hole punches. The round cutters core out clean circles in belt leather, rubber, and heavy canvas without tearing the edges. Waste plug material pushes up through the hollow barrel as you tap the tool down.
• Hardened steel bodies. We form these tools from hardened steel so the cutting points keep their edge against a backing board. A dark coating across each piece helps keep rust off the metal between bench projects.
• Checking hole sizes. Strap buckles and stitch weights vary between watch cases and thick belt hides. Check the maker label beside this to match the punch diameters and chisel spacing against the thread and hardware on your bench.
