A wet sponge drops the heat on an iron tip every time you wipe it, which slows you down while you wait for the iron to recover. A bundle of dry brass wire strips old solder and crust away without water. The round holder keeps the loose bits from flicking across the bench.

• Dry brass coils. Poking a hot iron into coiled brass wire scrapes away dull solder and crust without pulling heat out of the tip. You wipe and get straight back to the joint.
• Domed shell holder. The shell curves inward around the wire so flecks of solder stay inside the cup instead of scattering across your mat or falling into an open chassis on the desk.
